The That’s the Spirit Dress from LuLu’s is only $31, and the style — more draped than a streamlined — feels very modern.

There are going to be a lot of double takes this spring. Is she nude or is she wearing nude?

The beiges, nudes and blushes — whatever you want to call it — are explosive on the runways as well as the red carpet. Demi Moore and Kate Winslet wore nude at the Oscars as did Drew Barrymore in a completely sheer Versace gown at the Globes. And Kate Bosworth showed how nudes could be stunning in a less formal setting.

Every shade of beige or nude is out there this spring in short dresses, draped or layered. It’s really something to wear if you want to stand out — it’s not a dress that makes you disappear.

What works in the accessories department? Everything! Gold, silver, black work, as do oversized statement necklaces or a big earring. And, like Bosworth did, pump up the look with  Rouge Coco Chanel Red Lipstick.

It’s a spring/summer style staple. I want it and need to have it; however, it’s completely out of the budget. A summer shoe for $650? Are you nuts?

Extreme breastfeeding Should children be nursed for years

Extreme breastfeeding Should children be nursed for years

The Mail article tartly adds: "There is no explanation to explain why she believes this."

The story went viral on Twitter, as summarised by US social media site Intent.com. "Breastfeeding your three-year-old is one thing, but putting a picture of him doing it on the cover of Time?" tweeted The Daily News' Bill Hammond. Writer Meredith O'Brien argued it was a gimmick to grab readers: "The cover doesn't celebrate the practice. It exploits it."

Financial Times columnist Gillian Tett was one of those who queried the cover picture, as Politico.com reported, although she felt there were two sides to the debate.

The Daily Mail questions the wholesomeness of what Grumet was doing, noting how her blog includes a photo of her nursing her son in Hugh Hefner's mansion with the caption: "I've breastfed Aram at the Playboy mansion. I actually felt it was the most appropriate place on earth to do it."

Photographer Martin Schoeller, who says he took inspiration from images of the Madonna and child, explained to Time why he had featured the mothers and children standing up. "When you think of breastfeeding, you think of mothers holding their children, which was impossible with some of these older kids. I liked the idea of having the kids standing up to underline the point that this was an uncommon situation."

"My first thought was, it's a really cheap shot. It's a piece about Bill Sears, it's not about an attractive blonde woman breast feeding," Tett said on the chatshow Morning Joe. "And yet if you look across cultures across in the world today, attitudes about breast feeding and breasts in general vary enormously. In many ways, this is at least making us think about our approach toward parenting and our approach toward breast feeding. But it still makes me wince when I look at it."

It's easy to squirm at the cover, says Sheila Eldred at Discovery News, but says this is more about American "squeamishness" than anything else. And a related article in Time shows that the World Health Organization recommends breast-feeding until at least age two, and the average age of weaning worldwide is around four, she points out.

The woman, it turns out, is Jamie Lynne Grumet, a 26-year old mother from Los Angeles, and the boy is her son Aram, aged almost four.

There were angry reactions from mothers, according to Storyful, which aggregates news analysis and social media reactions to events, many worrying that Time's coverage will make it harder for women to breastfeed in public.

No government or international body has a recommended upper age limit on when a mother should stop breast feeding her child The World Health Organization (WHO) says there are a range of health benefits for exclusively breast feeding babies for the first six months After that the WHO suggests a combination of foods, fluids and breast milk up to the age of two "or beyond" Dr Mary Fewtrell, who specialises in childhood nutrition at University College London, said that there isn't any research into the health benefits of continuing to breastfeed children up until school age She said that "even for the health benefits of breastfeeding beyond a year or 18 months, there is little research" and that this was far more a social than a nutritional issue BBC Health: Nutritional needs for infants

The latest cover of Time magazine has caused outrage. Under the headline "Are you mom enough?", a young woman is pictured having her left breast suckled by a boy who appears way beyond usual breastfeeding age.

"The image is the natural next step in the hot naked-mama photos that have become an obligatory part of a celebrity career path (Claudia Schiffer, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson) and makes Angelina Jolie, who allowed herself to be photographed breast-feeding a mere infant, look like a wimp."

The magazine's photoshoot includes three other mothers, including Jessica Cary of Brooklyn, who has a three-year-old daughter. "I don't think about when I'll stop [breastfeeding]. For us, it's a life philosophy," Cary explains.

Breastfeeding children for years rather than months is in the news. But is there anything wrong with it?

And actress and new mother Alyssa Milano tweeted: "@TIME, no! You missed the mark! You're supposed to be making it easier for breastfeeding moms. Your cover is exploitive & extreme."

Others suggest the article is really about the guru of attachment parenting Dr William Sears, and question Time's motives for choosing a photogenic 26-year-old getting her breasts out.

Time defines attachment parenting as "extended breast-feeding, co-sleeping and 'baby wearing', in which infants are physically attached to their parents by slings."

Co-sleeping means the baby shares its parents' bed, rather than sleeping in a cot

The cover and accompanying article about "attachment parenting" has re-ignited the debate about whether extended breastfeeding – until the age of three or even six – is harmful. And the magazine and mother have faced accusations that they have exploited the child for publicity reasons.

Much of the criticism has focused on the age and looks of the mother. "Why is this attractive woman breast-feeding this giant child?" asks Hanna Rosin of Slate.

The mantra "breast is best" will be familiar to every mother – but for how long should an infant be nursed asks BBC health and science reporter James Gallagher.

As book thrives, Carole King closing book on music

As book thrives, Carole King closing book on music

With her writing frequently interrupted by concert tours and activism (including work for environmental causes and Democratic politicians), the book took King 12 years to write. She was determined to do it herself without a ghost- or co-writer.

NEW YORK (AP) — The voice behind dozens of standards like “It’s Too Late,” ”You’ve Got a Friend” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” says her music-making days are likely over.

Online:

But it doesn’t engage her nearly as much as the memoir. Learning it had made The New York Times best-sellers list excited King as much as learning that one of her songs was climbing the Billboard charts back in the day.

“I suppose if I had a reason to, if someone said I want you to write a song for this movie, I could sit down and do that,” she said. “But to just write songs and to throw them out into the marketplace, I don’t think this is my time to do that.”

Carole King, now a best-selling author, doubts she will ever write another song and suggested that her 2010 “Troubadours Reunion” concert tour with James Taylor would be her last: “It was a good way to go out.”

“At this point I can look back at my life and career as a songwriter and say I’ve done everything I really wanted to do,” King said.

That’s only a sampling, because King’s pre-”Tapestry” hits also included “Up on the Roof” (Drifters), “Loco-Motion” (Little Eva), “Will You Love Me Tomorrow (Shirelles), “One Fine Day” (Chiffons) and “Chains” (Cookies, later covered by the Beatles).

Those chances may be limited, too. King did a fair amount of touring during the past decade, but it took its toll. “I’m 70,” she said. “It would be lovely to retire.”

http://www.caroleking.com/legendary_demos/

___

“Now that I’m 70, I have bits of wisdom I can offer to a younger generation,” she said. “It’s not ‘This is the way it has to be,’ but ‘This is my experience, I hope this helps you.’”

“The Legendary Demos,” a title that embarrasses her, was a project of her daughter and manager, Sherry Kondor.

“It was very difficult, too complicated to talk about in a small sound bite,” she said. “My editor said to just write about it, you don’t have to include it. But I decided to include it because I want other women in abusive relationships to know that it’s not their fault and that it can happen to anyone.”

She hasn’t released an album of new compositions since 2001, and on her website’s exhaustive list of songs she has written, the most recent are two from 2004.

She’s not naive. She knows popular culture has long since moved elsewhere. As a teenage music prodigy she knew what young people were thinking about and wanted to hear in music, and she’s not there anymore.

“When you’ve written so many great ones like Carole King it’s difficult to top yourself,” the veteran singer said. “You have to keep reinventing, and she’s certainly one of the great pop writers of the last 50 years. It becomes a great challenge. People really want to hear her in concert doing those wonderful songs that they know.”

The decision to shut it down or keep creating is one that many members of an older musical generation face. Billy Joel announced in the early 1990s that he was through writing pop songs, and has stuck to that. But Bob Dylan has kept writing and releasing new music. Both surviving members of the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, keep turning out new projects. The Beach Boys have an unlikely reunion with a new album as well.

The strongest part of the book is also the most shocking. She talks of being physically and verbally abused by her third husband in the 1970s, the man who led her to the Idaho backcountry that she adores and still lives in. Even King found it hard to believe that despite fame, success and plenty of friends, she wouldn’t end the relationship the first time she was hit — and even several times thereafter. She finally did leave, and he died of a drug overdose shortly after that, according to her book.

King composed dozens of 1960s hits with then-husband Gerry Goffin before emerging as a recording artist in her own right. Her 25 million-selling “Tapestry” launched the singer-songwriter era in 1971 and became the first real blockbuster album. She spoke recently as two new projects offer fresh reminders of her legacy — the memoir “A Natural Woman” and a new disc that gathers “demo” recordings of some of her best-known songs that were made to sell the compositions to other artists.

It’s intriguing to hear King’s first take on the songs that became known through others, like “Pleasant Valley Sunday” (the Monkees), “Crying in the Rain” (Everly Brothers), “Take Good Care of My Baby” (Bobby Vee) and “You’ve Got a Friend” (James Taylor). The wiser artists didn’t fiddle much with her arrangements.

Neil Sedaka, who grew up in the same New York City song publishing houses as King, was wistful when told her old friend was no longer writing.

With her first book is fresh on the market, she’s already thinking about the possibility of another one.

“I supported it. But I had very little hand in it. I didn’t pick the songs. I saw the cover and said, ‘Yeah, that’s a nice picture,” King said.

Glee star confirms show departure

Glee star confirms show departure

However the show's creators hinted it did not necessarily mean the characters would leave the show.

Co-star Dianna Agron, who plays Quinn Fabray, also suggested her own time on the show was ending too.

Riley is one of a number of characters due to graduate from the fictional McKinley High later this month.

The actress is the first of the main cast, who have been on the show for three series, to confirm their departure.

She tweeted: "I don't know all that is to come, but I know what a day like this means. Four years of love, light and support.

"I have so many brothers and sisters now. But I am looking forward to a much needed and deserved summer vacation! School's Out Glee Kids! Let's play!"

Glee actress Amber Riley has revealed she is leaving the hit US show at the end of the current series.

"I'm going to miss the whole Glee family, seeing them everyday!" Riley wrote.

To the cast, crew and creators and to all of you that have shown your love along the way. We just can't thank you enough."

The 26-year-old, who plays Mercedes Jones on the musical comedy, tweeted: "That's a wrap on Amber Riley! Just closed a chapter in my life."

A fourth series of the show is due to be broadcast next year.

Hedi Slimane May Head Back To YSL

Hedi Slimane May Head Back To YSL

The curtain came down today on Raf Simons’ term at Jil Sander and next week, the brand’s namesake founder will once again be at the helm. Now rumors have surfaced that Hedi Slimane, the designer who came on the scene at Yves Saint Laurent in the nineties, might be back heading back to the French label.

Outlets in the U.S. and France, including WWD, Le Figaro, and the Agence France-Presse are reporting that sources close to the matter have said that Slimane will be named the new creative director of the house. Yves Saint Laurent’s parent company, PPR, has not commented, though current creative director Stefano Pilati’s contract is up next month and there has long been speculation over whether or not it will be extended. Slimane has been focused on photography since leaving Dior Homme in 2007. He has never helmed a women’s collection before but while at Dior, he made custom versions of his men’s suits for female clients.

D&G Is D&G Is…You

D&G Is D&G Is…You

Few fashion labels are as tapped into social media as Dolce & Gabbana. The Italian design duo has over three million Facebook fans and 203,250 Twitter followers (and counting). Plenty of them have shed a virtual tear since the brand announced that it was discontinuing its lower-priced D&G collection, but Domenico and Stefano would rather go out with a bang than a whimper. To celebrate the line’s last season, they’re asking their devotees to create music videos for a remix of D&G’s very own dance song, “D&G Music,” made several years ago and featuring Stefano repeating the brand mantra: “D&G is D&G, D&G is love.” The call will go out today, and aspiring directors have until January 9 to deliver their clips to www.dandgisdandg.com, after which the designers will handpick their favorites to be edited into a final video to be debuted on YouTube. For more information on the project, watch this video below.

Hamilton low key about 4-HR game, future in Texas

Hamilton low key about 4-HR game, future in Texas

The 18 total bases were an American League record, and the 5-for-5 performance gave him a .406 batting average with 14 homers and 36 RBIs — all tops in the AL.

“Hands down, he’s the best player in the American League,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. “He plays a premium position, he’s a five-tool guy. At times, like last night, he looks like a 15-year-old playing with 10-year-olds. He’s that talented.”

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, who served as the Rangers’ hitting coach in 2010, played in the majors for parts of 10 seasons and said a good day for him was four homers during batting practice.

“I’m happy that it happened while he was in a Texas Rangers uniform,” Washington said. “You don’t get an opportunity to look at that very often. You just watch it happen. He’s certainly capable of doing it. Only 16 guys have done it, but every time Hamilton is at the plate something magical can happen, especially if he centered the baseball the way he did last night. All I could do is cheer.”

AP Sports Writers Will Graves in Pittsburgh and Tom Withers in Cleveland contributed to this report.

Especially if Hamilton provides the kind of thrill he did Tuesday night.

The 2010 AL MVP battled injuries last season and had sports hernia surgery in November. Then came a public relapse in his battle with drugs and alcohol when he had a few drinks at a Dallas restaurant in January and continued drinking later that night. He held a news conference a few days later to apologize for the incident.

Could a Triple Crown be in his future?

Manager Ron Washington was asked Wednesday whether he would give up his salary to keep Hamilton with the Rangers.

“If it will keep Hamilton here, he can have mine,” Washington said. “I’ll manage in this game for nothing.”

Hamilton becomes a free agent after this season, and he’s not worried about his future. His thought is, if he’s meant to stay in Texas, then that is where he will end up.

“I’ve been completely able to block it out,” he said. “It’s easy for me to focus on playing baseball this season. Thinking about all that stuff, how to be the best I can be that night, doesn’t allow me to think about what’s going on in the next year.”

Hamilton isn’t counting on hitting four homers again anytime soon, either. After his incredible feat, he said it would take a while for the feeling to sink in, and by Wednesday he could appreciate the enormity of it

___

“I just sent him a text today and asked him I thought they outlawed using a tee in the American League,” Hurdle said.

“I don’t think about it. I honestly don’t,” the center fielder said. “The chances of that happening are very, very, very, very, very, very slim. So why worry about something that won’t happen anyway?”

Hamilton’s achievement against the Orioles certainly caught the attention of his fellow players, and it was still a topic of conversation around baseball on Wednesday.

Hamilton became the 16th player in major league history to hit four homers in a game during a 10-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. The last two balls were retrieved and given to him after the game. The fourth was authenticated.

Hamilton tossed the baseballs into his luggage at the team hotel, and he has no plans to showcase the record-tying ball in his house.

“It means a lot. It’s special to me. But I can’t live there,” he said. “I take the confidence with me of having a good game, like I would if I was 4 for 5 or 5 for 5 with five singles. I’m getting on base and scoring runs. You take all those things with you, but you don’t take the moment to the next day because 99.9 percent of the time it isn’t going to happen again. One hundred percent of the time in the case of this. Don’t live there. Just come in here, prepare, and move forward.”

“It will probably end up in a closet or rolling down a slide in the backyard, the girls playing with it,” he said Wednesday without a trace of a grin.

BALTIMORE (AP) — If the Hall of Fame ever comes calling for the last baseball Josh Hamilton hit over the wall on Tuesday night, the Texas Rangers slugger might need some time to track it down.
